Well, that didn't take long. The pro-tax team and their media shills at the Dallas Morning News to lay fault for defeat of their tax-and-fee at the feet of pesky taxpayers who didn't line-up in support.
The Tarrant County Judge, Glen Whitley, is quoted on the Dallas Morning News blog as saying, "I don't think any of us really believed that the opposition would be more successful in getting the grass roots support ...while we had a lot of (official) support back home, we didn't have the people calling in and basically filling up (lawmakers' phone) system."
What a SHOCK! In a deep recession taxpayers aren't running out to support higher taxes and more fees. Apparently Judge Whitley needs to get out and about more often.
As an aside, I see that the Dallas Morning News subscribers dropped 9.9% from last year. What ever could the market be saying...

Misunderstanding of newspapers
There is a difference between the editorial board of The Dallas Morning News, and The Dallas Morning News as a whole. The editorial board takes stances on particular issues - such as the one in favor of the rail legislation - but the news department doesn't.
The editorial board and news don't work hand-in-hand as you seem to indicate. The are two different and independent staffs.
You seem to think of the DMN as a monolithic entity, which is a basic misunderstanding of how things work.
Also, the decline of the DMN print circulation has nothing to do with any stances taken by the editorial board or any stories about the news department. Actually, news coverage is vastly more balanced now than in the first half of the century when newspapers had a much higher market penetration.
The number of readers of the DMN and many other papers are increasing, but people are reading online where ad rates are lower. The biggest cause of newspapers' financial trouble the plentiful free content on the Internet and Craig's List and other free online advertising sites.
You've obvious done research on rail and the fight in Austin. You should actually do some research on newspaper before you start commenting on that industry.
Funny how the biases is in
Funny how the biases is in the news stories always seem to mesh with the editorial opinions...
The DMN admitted in recent years to having LIED about their circulation numbers so they could charge advertisers more. The resulting payback cost Belo millions -- and lots of people their jobs.
The decline in readership "has nothing to do with any stances taken by the editorial board or any stories about the news department"?! I sure hope you were laughing when that was written, because no one believes it! People have stopped subscribing to the DMN for precisely those reasons.
