Perry Right To Reject Federal UI

Submitted by MQSullivan on Thu, 03/12/2009 - 1:15pm.

Governor Perry has done the right thing for employers and employees, and Texas’ economy, by rejecting the mandate-heavy UI portion of the federal stimulus package.

The package would force Texas down a costly path stifling, not stimulating, economic and employment growth. Taxpayers and small businesses would for many years bear the heavy burden of radical changes to unemployment insurance policies that the administration requires for Texas get short-term federal funding. The costs are simply too high.

For example, the federal funds would require that Texas keep paying out unemployment funds even if the recipients aren’t looking for full-time work. The mandates would also force payments to be made even to people who quit their job for personal situations.

Texas taxpayers don’t want, and cannot afford, to have Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid turning the Lone Star State into California or Illinois. The radical policy shifts they would force upon us would make it harder for Texans to find work, increase the cost of doing business, and restrain the kind of economic growth needed to employee, and empower, Texans.

BO,NP,HR

We need Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid like we need another hole in our head!

NO to the "stimulus" money

Thank you for standing for Texans best interest. As a life-long Texan, I do not want to see our state in the same shape as our country, due to the over-reaching, over-spending free-fall that the Obama admin. is laboring us all with. Stand firm and just keep saying NO NO NO NO!!!!!

You have got to be kidding

You have got to be kidding me. I am a single mom who lost my job of five years due to the economy. I am drawing unemployment. It is half of what I was making. When that is gone, I will lose my home, my car, and my kids and I will be another Texas family living on the street. You are all so worried about the wealthy having to pay more taxes that you could give a shit about people living on the streets. I hope you never have to watch your children or grand children go hungry. It will be a domino effect, eventually it will reach you. Remember, if America falls, we all fall.
Wake up and smell the roses, It is happening in TEXAS.

Refusing federal funds.

I strongly urge the opposition of taking federal funds.

We don't want the bad judgement of the Washington bureaucrats infecting the economy and businesses in Texas.

refusing federal funds

Governor Perry is to be commended for refusing the outstretched hand of those who would make us slaves to the federal government. I am appalled by the direction this country is taking and pray for our Governor as he stands firm against this idiocy. May all freedom-loving people stand with the governor on this one, and continue to say NO, in voices loud and clear, to government control of our lives. Otherwise, we very well could end up with NO LIFE, NO LIBERTY AND NO PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS as we struggle to survive each day's more punishing of work and rewarding of sloth. God help us; for the Federal Government (which was established to serve the people, not be their master) is growing stronger every day. Is this the change we wanted? Not in my book.

fiscal responsibility

Thank you Gov. Perry, you have done the right thing in refusing the obama stimulas which will make our great state more reliant on the federal government.
Please remember this when our so-called representives want to tell small privately owned businesses whether we can allow smoking or not.
As a small restaurant/bar owner who is a 5th generation Texan, I find it appalling that the Texas government can tell me what to do with my business.

Radicals, Obama, Pelosi and

Radicals, Obama, Pelosi and Reid are not a team to run our country. We don't need them to run Texas. Back to the Republic of Texas!! Thank God for Governor Perry.

YES, PERRY DID SOMETHING

YES, PERRY DID SOMETHING RIGHT. HE NEEDS TO REJECT THE OTHER PARTS OF IT ALSO. ACCEPTING SUCH HAS TO BE PAID FOR BY YOU KNOW WHO ! ! ! ! !

I agree that the whole thing should be rejected

It is time we quit looking at our own personal wants and needs and begin to view the Constitutional rape going on in America. We are about to lose everything because we are clinging to what we want in our individual lives. We need to act for our nation. If our nation fails, all our desires for money, jobs, etc. will go down the drain anyway.

Stimulus Package

Do I want Barrack, Harry and Nancy running Texas?
HELL NO!

For once, Perry did something right. Finally. Now, if we can get him to think for himself. I think he should have said no to all the Porkulus stuff. He should also back HCR 50. Loudly. He should even encourage all Texas legislators to support HCR 50. And, he should have the backbone (he acts like he is from New York) to tell the Federal Government to honor the Constitution as they have promised to do, and especially the 10th amendment. He should also eliminate the business tax! And about the promise of a 1/3rd reduction in Texans property taxes if the business tax were implemented - what went awry there? My property taxes actually went UP! As the Lt. Governor under Bush, he must have studied math with Bush, and learned that "fuzzy math" Bush was so famous for.
In other words, don't draw the line in the sand with all the Rs on one side and the Ds on the other.
Sure, Obama, Pelosi and Reid are crooks and love spending OPM (other people's money). So do Hutchison, Cornyn, and most of the Texas Senate and House. And, at the federal level, they hide it behind "ear marks".
Hold these folks accountable. Write real (snail mail) letters. Ask for specific answers, and don't accept "Government Speak" answers.

Good public posture now

But I wonder what the reaction is going to be this fall, when small businessmen statewide find that their unemployment tax is DOUBLED because Perry refused the federal money. How will that help the Texas economy?

Predicting the future

From where are you pulling this "DOUBLED" tax burden figure? (Rhetorical question)

The truth of the matter is there is no telling how high this tax will be in 6 months time. It's pure speculation that unemployment will be high enough to warrant that large of an increase of payments into the UI fund.

Two things that we can be certain of are the limited nature of the stimulus funds and the ongoing costs associated with the mandated changes in our UI code. The relationship between these two variables alone is cause enough to reject these funds and is not based on sham facts associated with the grow government bandwagon but based in known variables.

Governor Perry is to be

Governor Perry is to be commended for refusing the outstretched hand of those who would make us slaves to the federal government.

Texas

I do not care for Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid.

Leave us alone and quite the lobbing in congress. That is what is hurting every one.

Keep Washington's Middling Hands out of Texas -Keep Texas Safe

Thanks to Governor Perry's wisdom and courage in taking a stand against the UI portion of the Stimulus package. Taking this would have hurt our businesses, and we don't need Washington interfering with Texas.

Thank you Governor Perry for your wise decision.

Keep Washington out of Texas

Thanks Governor Perry. I do not want Barrak Obama, Harry and Nancy running Texas. No, not Texas

In added words, don't draw

In added words, don't draw the band in the beach with all the Rs on one ancillary and the Ds on the other.
Sure, Obama, Pelosi and Reid are crooks and adulation spending OPM (other people's money). So do Hutchison, Cornyn, and a lot of of the Texas Senate and House. And, at the federal level, they adumbrate it abaft "ear marks".
