Big Pork, Meet Big Spender

Submitted by MQSullivan on Thu, 02/12/2009 - 1:46pm.

While Texans are overwhelmingly opposed to the pork-fest activities in Washington, our new House Speaker has set the stage for amassing major debt in the Lone Star State by appointing government-grower extraordinaire Jim Dunnam (D-Waco) to chair a select committee charged with asking for, and recklessly spending, Obama's stimulus package. Make no mistake: this is bad news for Texas' taxpayers.

This is the same Jim Dunnam who, along with Republican Charlie Geren of Fort Worth, pushed to increase their House office budgets and staff salaries at a time when the state faces a multi-billion dollar budget shortfall and the Legislature is asking all state agencies to trim their budgets by 10 percent.

In recent weeks, every conservative leader in the state has stepped out against the stimulus package, noting the horrendous burden this costly boondoggle will place on states taking the money for years to come. The package money comes not with strings, but an economic hangman's noose for every state taking the money.

But Speaker Joe Straus has not only allowed the House to change its rules to circumvent the governor in asking for stimulus money – Perry has been opposed to the bailouts and indicated he won't take money for anything but one-time expenditures – Straus is putting the wolf in charge of the hen house.

The Obama-Pelosi-Reid plan not only prevents states from using the money for tax cuts, it puts taxpayers on the hook for costly government programs that will exist long after the three-year spending spree ends.

The creation of this select committee sends a confusing message not only about Straus' commitment to fiscal discipline, but even the rule of the House. Just a month ago, the House set rules sending all stimulus-related legislation to the Appropriations Committee. How that rule interacts with this select committee remains to be seen.

This is what happens when

This is what happens when you believe the media. There were countless number of articles in the Ft Worth Star Telegram about how bad Craddick was for Texas. Now with a new "moderate" speaker we are in trouble. The next thing you know they will want to take our guns.

Bring Back Tom Craddick!

Straus = FAIL.

Stimulus

I am totally against the stimulus as it is now. This administration scares me to death, especially for my Grandson. What are we coming too?

And for this we kicked

And for this we kicked Craddick out? Oh, brother. What a joke the Texas House has become.

stimulus

this is nothing more than trash. pelosi, reed and obama think they are God and are trying to fill his shoes. they can't. they are pushing socialism or trying to on the american people. they cannot do what so many others have tried to do, in different ways however. these people want to control what we do, eat and take as far as medications or natural herbs. i do not want a dictator. my dictator is way above them. they want the american people to eliminate our faith and i would die before they take that away. all religions have a voice except the christians. they cannot do this. we pray for these heathens so God will change their ways. prayer has always been here along with our God. they cannot take this away. the stimulus stinks and they are lying to us all.

Agree!

You are very, very right!

If it is accepted, it should

If it is accepted, it should go to the Appropriations Committee to decide the expenditures. We are not in favor of the stimulusless bill and have been involved in communicating our desires to our Senators and Representative. This bill is a reward for all the groups that supported the Dems and money should not go to ACORN or Planned Parenthood for starters.

stimulus pkg

It is needed!!! If Congress can spend 12 BILLION a month on Iraq (my idea of a costly boondoggle) it can spend 789 billion on infrastructure here in the United States, where it is desparatley needed. That's a burden I gladly take on.I grew up hearing stories of how the CCC kept my father's family working...and eating. It was a success, contrary to the Republican spin now. No more taxcuts!! The Republicans tried that and look where we are now. I teach my students they can't say no to an idea if they can't offer a better idea.I have listened very closely to the Republicans and they don't have a better idea, in fact they have no ideas except tax cuts. If you don't want the stimulus, great, send it to the schools for school construction. If you don't think there is a need for that, come visit my school district where I have spent the majority of my 25 year career in a portable. Now that would be thinking about future generations.

Stimulus Package

BUT, the money will not be spent on "infrastructure" jobs. Have you read the bill? Don't think so. Infrastructure is the responsibility of each individual state (and that state's taxpayers). If the taxpayers within the state want more tax money for infrastructure, then fine, let them vote for it. Infrastructure is not the constitutional responsibility of the federal government. Ditto for telecommunications "infrastructure". That translates into subsidies for AT&T and Verizon to put computers and telephone lines in Appalacia at the expense of Texas taxpayers. Ditto for school infrastructure or "rebuilding". School buildings are the responsibility of the taxpayers in each I.S.D. Tough if those in New York or Chicago are falling down. I do not want to pay for them. Can't you see what a huge, unconstitutional, SOCIALIST agenda this is? GEt a grip[!!!

lipstick on a pig

To quote Obama: "you can put lipstick on a pig, and it is still a pig". This is pork at its most pernicious application. There's so much garbage in this bill it would make a pig turn purple. I'm sure your students are getting a liberal's eye view of the state of the union. Tax cuts always work, especially when they are combined with spending cuts. No doubt you are teaching your students that they and their children and grandchildren will be paying for this behemoth for years to come, if they have any thing left after this administration gets through picking their pockets. Bless you for being a teacher, but if an idea is a bad one, regardless if you have a better one or not, reject the bad one until something better is brought forth. This one stinks, and the stench will be around for years.

You can build all the

You can build all the schools you want. Until we get teachers who can tell the difference from socialism and capitalism we are doomed. Tax cuts allow people to keep more of their money and spend it the way they want to instead of sending it to Washington and letting it be spent on ACORN and global warming. There is no doubt the CCC kept people working and eating. Today it is known as welfare and food stamps. They produce the same results, people dependent on Government. I prefer for teachers to teach personal responsibility rather than looking to government to run their life,

Just Say NO

You sound like some of the teachers from whose classrooms I removed my kids. While I applauded you for speaking your mind in public, you don't have the right teach your personal opinions to our children. Your job is teaching facts, not fiction, not opinions.

As to the "recovery" act, it's only going to prolong the inevitable - in my opinion. Add to that the fact that it isn't my responsibility to pay for bad money management on the part of banks, businesses and individuals. It seems to me that this country has really gone down hill in my life time. There was a time when people were expected to do what was right and when they messed up, they were expected to face the consequences. By facing the consequences, they didn't make the mistake again. That's how I've lived my life and it's how I expect everyone else to live theirs. Personal responsibility seems to have become a thing of the past and that's a real shame.

My kids, grandkids, great grandkids and so on, shouldn't have to pay most of what they earn to make up for the irresponsible actions of others and that's what this bill will mean for them.

As to building schools, I pay well over 2,000 a year in property taxes just for the school, as do the 100s of thousands of other property owners in my area. If that, plus what they get from other sources, isn't enough to take care of the schools and the kids, then perhaps it's time to take a harder look at school budgets. As an old boss of mine used to say, perhaps it's time for a Come to Jesus meeting with the people who are supposed to be making good use of the money I pay in every single year because obviously, they aren't doing a good job.

If I cut my family budget...

...they have to cut their office budget.

Also, I DON'T WANT TO PAY FOR MASSACHUSETTS'S AND CALIFORNIA'S RUNAWAY DEFICITS!

Accepting the Stimulus package?? NO!!!

Why can't the Texas Legislature simply turn down the Stimulus Package for Texas??? I don't want it, and I am sure most Texans do not. If we turn down the package, don't we get to turn down "mandates" as well? Tell the Texas Legislature to refuse the stimulus and to refuse greater federal control over Texans.

Stimulus package cost too high

I am against the stimulus package overall.

The US is in debt, raising taxes, and now starting programs with Federal money that will end but the program will still need more money. From me?

Start with cutting pork money. Cut the gov salaries and benefits and set them level with the public market. Let badly managed companies fall to teach others what will not work anymore. Competition is what runs this country, not tax money to reward bad management. Putting the US in further debt is not helping.

Stimulus package

So full of pork sausage that We taxpayers & or the state of Texas will never get out from under it.

Toxic Money

Our Republic is being turned into a Socialist State and the "stimulus" is the first move. Woe to the state that accepts funds from it. They will be subject to more rules which will suppress small business and turn us into a welfare state. We need to ensure Texas does not sign on to this catastrophe. If you want to see what will happen in the future, turn to the past and find out what really happened during Roosevelt's New Deal. Also, read "Atlas Shrugged"

Texans need I&R rights to have a say in our state government.

Government control

If the government can't keep the peanut butter clean, what on earth makes them think I would trust them with my health care!

We watched how they handled FEMA and all the temporary housing that was never set up and the extravagant amounts spent for the ones that were set up (over $100,000 per trailer house I believe).

When I am having a stroke or heart attack will I have to press 1 for English and then wait "until the next available" gets back from coffee break, "because my call is important to them"? If the government is between me and my doctor determining what I need, we will all die before our turn comes for help.

Do you have a copy of the entire bill that I could read?

stimulus/economy

I am very much against the stimulus.....it is not good. A housewife's definition of pork is much different than the bloated 'aristocracy' in Washington. Good for Rick Perry. Maybe Straus is too moderate. Perhaps all of these polititians should go back several years and study Sam Rayburn and his ethics.....Barbara Croft, Dayton, Texas

Stimulus - Socialism

This is the worst package the Dems could get passed. It is really sad that so many don't know history or care enough to ask pertinent questions about the laws that congress considers and often passes. The country will pay for a long time for this bill even if conservatives recover control in 2010.

Texas should avoid Federal help from this bill like the plague. We don't have to have these handouts and we should not take them.

Bailout

The stimulus package is probably the worst legislation ever passed by congress. Gov. Perry is correct and to be praised for refusing the funding for anything except one-time expenditures. Speaker Straus is showing he is willing to go to the trough now that he is in a position of power. Hopefully the house will show some backbone and refuse to allow their rules to be circumvented. I wont hold my breath.

Stimulus Money

I am opposed to accepting any stimulus money by the state of Texas other than for one-time expenditures.

Select Commission for spending stimulus money

We should not accept the stimulus funds for starters. If it is accepted, it should go to the Appropriations Committee to decide the expenditures. can the dough boy, impeach the speaker

Accepting 'stimulus' money will only give the impression that Texans agree with it. Refuse the money, can the dough boy, and impeach the speaker. Its time to start playing hardball with Democrats and Rinos. The will of the people, the consent of the governed has been usurped. The Declaration of Independence could be used today to throw off a government that is abusive, unresponsive to the wishes of the people, and despotic. Its time to raise the flag and sound the cry once again: "Give me liberty or give me death".

Federal money (i.e. personal

Federal money (i.e. personal taxes collected) received into amy organization allows the federal workers to control the organization. Therefore, the "nationalization" of state governments and private industry is affected. Only the uneducated and socialists allow the principles that made US great to be damaged. Which one are you?

stimulust

Butcher that turkey, we'd have enough pork to keep every third world country in beans for the next century.

Death Sentence for America

How was the USSR destroyed? The USSR spent itself into oblivion trying to compete with the USA's defense program. How will the USA be destroyed? Spending itself into oblivion trying to become like the USSR. The TARP and STIMUSPEND programs will increase our deficit to an unbearable level! We are finished!

pork

You porkers keep the money! I'll keep my freedom. I don't need anymore freakin mandates from an oversized bloated irresponsible greedy federal gov't! Trust the gov't?
Are you kidding me? They are in it for themselves and the money alone. Not all, but MOST! OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ready to scream

I had to share this. There was meeting of governors who are planning on how to spend the stimulus money as soon as it comes in. A DOL employee spoke at the meeting to give guidance on federal expectations for spending the youth portion of the Workforce Investment Act funds that are included in the "stimulus" bill.

The thought process behind the Summer youth employment piece that this person imparted was that it is to get summer jobs for youth ages 14 - 24 and then to sit back while they earn money and then spend it, as much as possible. With the full knowledge that it will be spent on junk - Ipods, whatever, in order to "get the money back into the economy." All because they KNOW that these kids are going to be irresponsible. They are going to play that irresponsible behavior to the fullest extent possible.

What are they teaching/giving the kids? Work ethics? No. Training for a future job that will help them to become successful, contributing members in society? No. Money management skills - nope. How to be materialistic little fools who will be broke most of their lives and living on welfare - that's the one!

I have to wonder how much of this your average tax payer knows. Do they care? Is this really what they want? Do they want to continue the moral bankrupting of this country? Don't they understand or care that this simply means another generation of "it's all about me" children who will one day grow up and be the leaders of this joint? How scary is that!

Well - that's my rant for the day.

We do not want Washington's money!

Do not support the over-spend pork laden Democrats in Washington, tell then to keep every dime of it!
