Fighting Taxpayers

Dallas citizens have successfully forced city officials to place a referendum before the voters next spring opposing a tax-funded hotel and convention center. But that isn't stopping -- or slowing -- the city council from pushing full-steam ahead on the plans.
The Dallas Blog notes Mayor Tom Leppert says the city will name a hotel operator later this month and start selling bonds in January to fund construction.
This project is destined to be yet another Dallas boondoggle. At a bare minimum it pits the city against existing business owners, and tells potential entrepreneurs that at any time the city might just jump into their business, as well. And use the taxpayers' money to compete against those same taxpayers.

Interesting
So we have gone from a government of the people, for the people to competing against the people we are supposed to be supporting.
I hate to say it, but I am beginning to believe that the people have no alternative but to vote out the people who do not follow the lead of the people.
This years election with many times more voters then normal may be just the beginning.
Perhaps that means people are beginning to wake up to the fact that their one vote does make a difference.

Dallas Convention Center Hotel
No. No. A thousand times, no.
Regular shuttles to/from the Center and existing hotels would accomplish the same function as a taxpayer funded hotel. The existing tax paying hotels also likely would subsidize the city shuttle.
The last major expansion of the Center was justified as necessary to making the Center self supporting. Has this happened? No. No. A thousand times no.
Will the premium paid paid for the parking lot to build the hotel be recovered from the sale of Reunion. No. No. A thousand times no. Have we any reason to believe this latest boon doggle would be different? I punt.
