In the House District 55 race, Martha Tyroch’s campaign advisors demanded that YouTube pull a parody of her campaign ad, claiming a “copyright violation.” YouTube removed the piece this morning. The parody, created by the Empower Texans PAC, highlighted Tyroch’s record on budget issues and was clearly a “spoof” of her campaign ad (also on YouTube).
The treasurer of the Empower Texans PAC, Michael Quinn Sullivan, said such an action demonstrates the lengths Tyroch and her advisors will go to stifle an open discussion of her record in a very important election. Earlier this week, the PAC endorsed of her opponent, Ralph Sheffield.
“The First Amendment clearly was designed to protect political speech, and copyright laws were never intended to be used as a weapon to stifle discussions in a campaign season,” said Sullivan, a former newspaper reporter. “The action by Tyroch and her advisors demonstrates a contempt for free speech that is matched only by her unwillingness to talk about the 91-percent increase in general fund spending that occurred during her term on the Temple City Council.”
Sullivan said the video is still available for download on the organization’s website (9mb file), orcan be streamed from numerous other video-sharing websites on the Internet (see below).
“Martha is 0-3 when it comes to protecting taxpayers. She skipped a vote in 2001 where taxes were raised and voted to increase taxes two other times. The tax burden on Temple residents increased every year that Martha Tyroch was on the city council,” added Sullivan. “Now it appears not only do voters and taxpayers have to worry about the fiscal impact of her service, but also her plans to further erode First Amendment rights.”
When one goes to the YouTube link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxsPhIkCXZw) for the parody, a message reads, “This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by Martha Tyroch for State Representative Campaign and Anthem Media, LLC.”
Concluded Sullivan: “Apparently Martha Tyroch doesn’t have a sense of humor when it comes to her record of increasing taxes and growing government.”

Sheffield Tactics
If the best Sheffield can do to promote his campaign is to denegrade his opponent on unfounded accusations, then he must not have much to offer. Candidates can SAY anything, but can HE actually bring any of it to fruition? This looks to me like someone that will do ANYTHING to win...which makes him like all the other politicians he claims to be different from....hmmmm....

These are not unfounded accusations. The policies enacted while Tyroch was a member of the council increased the tax burden on the citizens of Temple and resulted in little return (ascend the page to see cited examples). Sometimes the truth hurts. It would make more sense for you to be focused on the candidate who is misrepresenting her record rather than try and predict the future from what Ralph Sheffield is campaigning on. It is our job to hold elected officials accountable for their actions. Rewarding Tyroch with a seat in the House of Reps for raising taxes would be like rewarding your child for stealing your neighbors yard gnome. Only instead of a yard gnome Tyroch is looking to take more of your money and give it to others who are more than happy to spend it. As if raising your taxes were not enough she would also like to infringe on you right to political expression. Looks to me like someone that will do ANYTHING to win...which makes her like all the other politicians she claims to be different from. (No hmmms...about it.)

I don't care what principles Sheffield has. I worked for the guy, guess what not one of his employees likes him. He doesn't work anymore only writes checks and doesn't have the guts to talk to his employees himself. I was fired because he couldn't keep enough people hired to work a shift and one of his friends did not think she got good enough service. One server for the entire patio of his dirty ass restaurant. He has no leadership skills, no management skills, and no people skills.

Lower pricing on menu?
Ask Sheffield how much his dishwashers make at his restaurant? If they're paid minimum wage, then they are more likely on food stamps and on government subsidies? Why isn't anyone asking him about that. Does he keep his dishwasher salaries down in order to lower his menu prices so people can more afford to eat there? Is that how he plans to institute lower taxes at the state level?

People should check out the city website on their own instead of taking the word of pundits....and you'll see that an entire council voted for the quality of life issues that affected Temple Citizens...it takes more than one vote to make something happen in a government of the citizens.

On fiscal issues, John Sharp is more conservative than David Dewhurst. Who held a further reduction of property taxes hostage this year after the Sharp plan was put into effect? It was David Dewhurst. Who decided that the TIF tax should not be abolished for another year because we "need more government revenue"? It was David Dewhurst.
But, this has nothing to do with Tyroch's record of taxing and spending. Are the citizes of Temple better off now after giving up more of their tax money? If the answer is no, then they should vote for Ralph Sheffield, a man who has worked to create jobs through his small business. This race truly is a clash of small business owners interests vs government bureaucrats.
Revenues
It's easy for Sheffield to say he would lower taxes and institute caps, but when it came down to services that he requires his city to provide; i.e. water, sewer, streets, police, firemen, EMT's, etc. (which costs continue to escalate), while still providing the quality of life elements such as recreation, culture, safe parks, code enforecement, etc., which items will he give up in order to lower taxes. State government puts unfunded mandated legislation on municipalities that cost money as well...but in this ad he isn't blaming the state mandates, (including requiring appraisals to meet market pricing), but accuses his opponent of raising taxes....as opposed to not lowering them. Shame on her and the REST OF THE COUNCIL for wanting to give pay increases to police and firemen!! Shame on you Martha for taking care of your citizens. Will Sheffield do the same?

Actually, the facts show that critical city services got the short-end of the stick under Martha Tyroch. She grew leisure services more than 110%, while fire and police languished. Rather typical: hike spending on non-essentials, then claim tax increases were for essentials.
You have portrayed Martha Tyroch absolutely wrong!
If Martha Tyroch ignored the police and fire, as your comment says, then explain to the voters why the following groups endorsed Martha Tyroch: Texas State Association of Fire Fighters, Temple Professional Firefighter's Association Local 846, and Central Texas Fraternal Order of Police #29. These groups endorsed Martha because Martha is an advocate for their needs and actually understands what they provide for the community. If you will look at the records, you'll see that Martha voted to increase their pay and fought to provide more resources so the City was a better place to live...and your number is distorted because there have been CITIZEN-APPROVED bond elections since 2000.
There are other groups that have endorsed her which show that she is an advocate for Pro-Life issues, nursing issues, homebuilding issues, as well as private property rights issues. All you have to do is view her website and see for yourself: www.marthatyrochfortexas.org.
The constituents of District 55 deserve someone who will pay their own taxes, be a good citizen and participate in the voting process, be a public servant instead of a public problem, and always put the interests of Bell County above any interests which are solely for personal gain. Anyone who knows the truth about Ralph Sheffield knows that he doesn't do what I just mentioned and if you'd check out his records instead of focusing on Martha's, you'd see the truth about this candidate that you've endorsed.
