The Texas Legislature’s 80th Session was a failure for Texas’ taxpayers. Not only did lawmakers fail to provide much-needed additional property tax relief (despite a record-shattering $14 billion surplus), they didn’t reform the property tax appraisal system and they grew state government to an astounding $152 billion.
In considering issues affecting the pocketbooks and livelihoods of Texans, taxpayers would have done better if a monkey had flipped a coin, rather than rely on the performance of their elected officials. Lawmakers on average scored a 46.13% in voting for Texas’ taxpayers. Only Texas House Republicans, as a group, scored above the failing mark (with a 75 percent.), while Senate Republicans score under 50 percent.
