Railroad Commission Chairman Victor Carrillo was endorsed today by the state’s leading taxpayer advocacy organization’s political action arm for his ongoing work in driving agency efficiency and promoting sound energy policy.
“The Texas Railroad Commission labors under the radar of most voters. That’s unfortunate, given just how important their work is in regulating the state’s energy industries,” said Michael Quinn Sullivan, president of Texans for Fiscal Responsibility and treasurer of the Empower Texans PAC.
“Chairman Carrillo’s background as a geologist means he understands the technical production challenges faced by those producing energy in Texas. As an attorney, he has a practical understanding of just how cumbersome even well-intentioned rules and regulations can be.”
Sullivan praised Carrillo for strong leadership in deftly managing the frenetic swings of the energy production sector over the last six years. The agency has operated efficiently, keeping the critical permitting process streamlined, while ensuring safe operations.
“As the commission comes under Sunset Review, Mr. Carrillo has been advocating for numerous reforms that should be seriously considered by the Legislature and the people of Texas. Ranging from changing the name – they don’t actually have much to do with railroads anymore – to reorganizing the commission and improving the regulatory process, Mr. Carrillo is leading the charge to make the agency more effective and efficient while reducing costs and burdens.”
Sullivan also noted Carrillo’s staunch opposition to heavy-handed mandates from Washington, including the onerous cap-and-trade proposals. Carrillo has been outspoken in the need for a stronger response from the state against such measures, even while using his position on numerous regional, national and international councils to advocate for sensible policies. Prior to his service on the Railroad Commission, Carrillo served on the Abilene City Council and then as Taylor County Judge.
“Texans have been fortunate to have Victor Carrillo serve on the state’s Railroad Commission, and we will benefit from giving him another term in that office.”
