No one wants to be called a slumlord; bad for business. It’s worse when it’s the local paper. And it’s disastrous when said slumlord is a state representative. Of course, since Hubert Vo’s voting record is as ramshackle as the properties he owns, let’s hope voters choose to evict him in November.
Vo’s challenger in November is Greg Meyer, who just keeps looking better all the time. Meyer is a strong candidate. A businessman who is both right-thinking and constituent-minded, with a strong streak of fiscal commonsense thrown in for good measure.
But the more the public takes a look at Hubert Vo, the more disturbing becomes the picture. He’s a refugee-turned-millionaire who apparently doesn’t mind sticking to the little guy.
The Houston Chronicle editorial board notes that, “Residents told Chronicle reporters their dwellings had leaky roofs and were infested with rats and roaches. In response, Vo met with city inspectors and promised to bring his units up to city code. [The Houston Chronicle reporter] followed up the story with visits to four other apartment complexes Vo owns in the Houston area and found comparable conditions at several of them. Photos documented a stagnant, algae-clouded swimming pool, broken windows and exposed wiring.”
Vo also has a political history of breaking the rules. He done things like handed out gift cards and discount coupons to people promising to vote for him.
From his business practices to his campaign ethics to his voting record, it’s time for Vo to go.
